MEET KURTIS

Experienced Public Servant
A dedicated municipal public servant with over a decade of experience in local administration and public service. From early civic leadership on the Durham Youth Council to roles within the public library system and municipal government, I have consistently worked to build stronger, more resilient communities that support local families and foster equitable access to public services.
Small Business Owner
Principal of Lakeside Communications, bringing strict fiscal responsibility and strategic planning to the table.
A MESSAGE FROM KURTIS
My commitment to education, youth leadership, and civic engagement runs deep. Early in my public service journey, I proudly served as the Chair of the Durham Youth Council, an experience that ignited my lifelong passion for amplifying young voices and fostering community growth.
Now, with over a decade of experience in public service and community-focused communication roles, I have dedicated my professional life to building bridges, listening to people, and delivering real results.
While my professional background gives me the tools to advocate effectively, it’s my family that drives my passion. For the past eight years, my wife and I have proudly called Clarington home. Together, we are raising our two wonderful children, who are currently navigating their own journeys through our local school system.
Seeing our education system through the eyes of my own kids gives me a firsthand understanding of the successes and challenges families face today. I truly believe that strong schools are built on collaborative, open communication between parents, educators, and the board.
I'm not just running to be a voice on the board, I’m running to ensure that your family has a dedicated, approachable ally championing the future of our children.
Mental Health Resources
Mental health resources are crucial for fostering a supportive community. As a trustee candidate, I will advocate for increased access to mental health services, ensuring that every individual has the support they need. Together, we can promote awareness, reduce stigma, and create programs that prioritize mental well-being for all. Let's build a healthier community by investing in mental health resources.
Transparent Communication and Active Parent Engagement
As a parent and communications professional, I know that our school system works best when parents have a real seat at the table. I will use my professional background to champion clear, timely, and accessible communication between the school board and our community. I want to strengthen the partnership between families, school councils, and trustees so that your voice is heard before major decisions are made.
Creating Safe, Healthy, and Supportive Environments
Every child deserves to learn in a safe, modern, and welcoming space. I will prioritize student well-being by advocating for robust mental health resources, addressing local school infrastructure needs, and ensuring our classrooms are safe environments where students can focus on learning, building friendships, and growing into future leaders.
Community Partnership
I am committed to building strong relationships with local organizations and businesses to enhance students well-being. By with various stakeholders, we can address key issues, share resources, and create programs that truly benefit our students. Together, we can foster a sense of unity and engagement, ensuring that everyone has a voice in shaping our future.
